Main Menu
Upon opening MKSAP 14 Online, you will be presented with the Main Menu, shown below:

In the main content area of the Main Menu, you are provided links directly to the 1st section of every book and the 1st question of each self-assessment section. By clicking the Syllabus link under 1 of the 11 books, you will be taken to the 1st section of that book. By clicking the Self-Assessment link, you will be taken to the 1st question.

You are also provided links to the Contributors and Disclosures, Answer Sheet, and Related MKSAP 14 Products, including MKSAP 14 CD-ROM, Self-assessment Updates, MKSAP Maintenance of Certification MOC Modules, and Performance Interpretation Guidelines with Norm Tables. There is also a link for Subscribers to create or change their username/password and other coming soon information for MKSAP 14 Online.
Table of Contents
The Table of Contents pane appears at the top of all syllabus pages (shown below).

By clicking on MKSAP 14, you will return to the Main Menu screen. If you click on any title, you will see a pop-out of all subsections under that title. By clicking the a subsection title, you are taken directly to that subsection. Any title listed with a tan arrow has a subsections. Any title listed with a red box is the lowest section available. To close to pop-out, click the X in the upper corner of the pop-out.
Previous
Navigates back one topic in the table of contents. Note that the Previous button is different than your browser's Back button.

Next
Navigates forward one topic in the table of contents. Note that the Next button is different than your browser's Forward button.

Searching
To search for any term in MKSAP 14 Online, type your desired keyword in the search box in the top left corner on every page.

Using the power of Google Search, results will be quickly displayed. For additional searching options, click the Advanced Search link. For even more information about the search functions, including tips for searching, see Google Search User Help.
Syllabus
You can access the Syllabus pages from the Main Menu as well as the Table of Contents. The section title will display in the black bar at the top of every page.
Test Your Knowledge
Under the black bar on every syllabus page, there is a tab to Test Your Knowledge. When you click this tab, content will drop down. Any questions that relate to the current syllabus will be listed, and a link to those questions is provided (see an example below).

If there are no questions related directly to that topic, you will be asked to try selecting a higher level topic or to view all questions in that book.
To hide this content after opening, click the Test Your Knowledge tab again.
Related Syllabus
Under the black bar on every question page, there is a tab for Related Syllabus content. When you click this tab, content will drop down. Any syllabus pages that relate to the current question will be listed, and a link to those pages is provided (see an example below).

Normal Lab Values
At the top of every syllabus page, there is a tab for the Normal Lab Values. When you click this tab, the Normal Lab Values (NLV) tool will drop down.

When the NLV initially opens, it will list the first 8 out of 128 studies. To find your desired test results, begin typing in the text box, which reads "Type test name." As you type, the list will change to match your test.
To narrow your search to a specific area (e.g. Hematology, Endocrine, Urine), select the icon that looks like a magnifying glass located next to the text box. This will list the different test areas available. When you select an area, the icon will change color. If you now click in the text box, the first 8 tests in that area will display. To find your desired test results in that specific area, begin typing in the text box. As you type, the list will change to match your test.
When you find the test you desire, click it to display the normal lab values for that test.
To hide the NLV tool after opening, click the Normal Lab Values tab again.
Recent Advances
The new Recent Advances component will alert you to new medical developments you must know. Recent Advances will appear in a green box with the "Recent Advances" heading on appropriate syllabus pages.
Key Points
Key Points summarize highlights and important information. Selected references will be listed at the end of each section. Key Points will appear in a green box with the "Key Points" heading on appropriate syllabus and question pages.
Figures
Figure links are included throughout the syllabus text. When you place your mouse over the figure link, a preview of the image will appear. If you click the link, a new window will popup, containing the full-size figure, figure title, figure legend, copyright information, and the ability to print.

Tables
Table links are included throughout the syllabus text. If you click the link, a new window will popup, containing the table, title, legend, copyright information, and the ability to print.
Citations
Citations are included throughout the syllabus text. When citations are listed, they will appear as underlined numbers in parenthesis. When you place your mouse over the number, the reference will appear. If you click the number, a new window will popup, containing PubMed information, full-text articles from Annals of Internal Medicine and ACP Journal Club or other supporting material.

Videos
Video Tutorials are only available in the MKSAP 14 CD product. If you are not already a subscriber to MKSAP 14 Complete or the MKSAP 14 CD product, please visit the MKSAP 14 CD-ROM ordering area.
Self-Assessment Questions
There are over 1,200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in MKSAP 14 Online. You can access the question pages from the Main Menu as well as the Answer Sheet. You may also jump to any question in a book by using the drow-down list above the black bar. The book title and item number will display in the black bar at the top of every page.
Tip: You can access the Answer Sheet by clicking the icon located next to the title in the black bar at the top of every question page (see an example below).

Answering Questions
In each question, you will be presented with relevant information, which may include supporting laboratory studies or figures, and will be asked to choose from 4 or 5 possible answers.
Click the radio button next to the answer you feel is the most correct. If you choose correctly, your answer will change to a green background. If you choose incorrectly, your answer will appear in red, while the correct answer will appear in green.
Colored bars will appear next to each answer. If you place your mouse over a bar, the percentage of pretesters who chose that answer will display. See the image below for an example.

Once you answer a question, a detailed critque will display under the answers. The critque contains information about each answer and the reason it is either correct or incorrect. There will also be key points to remember for the question, as well as references for supporting information.
To go to the next question, click the "Next Item" button at the bottom of the page.

Answer Sheet
The Answer Sheet displays your progress for each self-assessment test, showing how many questions are answered correctly/incorrectly, how many questions have not been answered, pre-tester statistics, and the ability to navigate to any question directly.

Accessing the Answer Sheet
There are several methods available for accessing the Answer Sheet:
- The Answer Sheet link on the Main Menu
- The icon located next to the title in the black bar at the top of every question page (see an example below).

- When you complete the last question in a book, clicking the "Next Item" button will automatically take you to the Answer Sheet.
Answer Details
The Answer Sheet area includes several additional features specifically designed to assist you with assessing your areas of strength and weakness. To view these details, click the down arrow located below the book title.

Answer Progress Bar
There are progress bars showing your progress in each test, including correctly answered questions, incorrectly answered questions, and unanswered questions. The bar gives a quick glimpse at your progress, displaying green for correct answers, red for incorrect answers and tan for unanswered questions. If you place your mouse over the bar, the exact percentages will be displayed.

Correct/Incorrect Answers
As you answer questions in a discipline, the answer sheet will automatically calculate your answers and update. If you answer a question incorrectly, your answer will be displayed with a red "X" through it and the correct answer will be given to the right of your answer. Correct answers will be displayed in a box. Unanswered questions will be blank. To go directly to any questions, click the Item number.

Pretester Data
Bars will appear next to each answer. If you place your mouse over a bar for a correct answer, the percentage of pretesters who chose that answer will display and match the percentage of pretester who chose correctly. If you place your mouse over a bar for an incorrect answer, the percentage of pretesters who chose correctly will display as well as the percentage of pretesters who chose the same incorrect answer as you.

Clear All Answers
In the top right corner of the Answer Sheet, there is the option to "clear all answers." Clicking this link will clear all answers in all books. You will be asked to confirm that you want to proceed. Note that the clearing of your answers is permanent. If you are sure you want to erase all of your answers from all of the books, click OK; click Cancel to keep your answers.
Print Record
In the top right corner of the Answer Sheet, there is the option to "print record." Clicking this link opens all details on each test and sends the full listing to your default printer.
Note: Clicking your browser's print button will only print the content shown on the screen. Hidden answer details will not print unless you click "print record."
Clear These Answers
In each book's question details, there is the option to "clear these answers." Clicking this link will clear all answers in that book only. You will be asked to confirm that you want to proceed. Note that the clearing of your answers is permanent. If you are sure you want to erase your answers from that book, click OK; click Cancel to keep your answers.
CME (Continuing Medical Education) Credit
MKSAP 14 Online is NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CME SUBMISSION. CME Credit is only available in the MKSAP 14 CD product. If you are not already a subscriber to MKSAP 14 Complete or the MKSAP 14 CD product, please visit the MKSAP 14 CD-ROM ordering area.
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives of the Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program are to assess the current state of your knowledge in clinical medicine, update your knowledge in key areas of internal medicine, apply new clinical problem-solving skills to improve the health of your patients, compare your performance on the self-assessment tests with that of your peers, and pursue in-depth study using critically reviewed evidence-based references.
