- Diabetic patients with CAD should receive statin therapy.
Complications of diabetes mellitus include large vessel atherosclerosis leading to myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction, stroke, and renal failure. Control of hypertension and dyslipidemia can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. Cardiovascular event rates are increased in insulin-resistant patients, even in those without frank diabetes mellitus. Patients with diabetes who experience myocardial infarction have poorer outcomes with regard to long-term survival than nondiabetic patients.
